  1. I am noticing that the bible is a lot easier to read then mythology because it is cronological which we talked about in class. The stories are also more light hearted then the mythology stories and there is way less emotion, its harder to relate to. Mythology is a lot more emotional and feeling driven. The stories in the bible are very logical and calm.

  2. Kind of different thoughts about the Noah's Ark story:

Both God and Zeus use the exact same technique for flushing out humankind. They flood the earth. The difference is, God wanted to make a better generation of humans, but Zeus just wanted to wipe them out. period. Also, if it rained for forty days and forty nights in modern times, we would easily be able to survive with our complex sewer and drainage system. At 6:14 (not the time) God commands Noah to make an ark out of "gopher wood". What's that?

  3. I noted that both Zeus and our Lord were disappointed with the direction of mankind. So to stop evil and corruption Both gods chose to exterminate the human race. It is ironic that someone would choose more violence to try and prevent violence and evil. However Zeus is portrayed as a Powerful but imperfect and sometimes rash god while the Christian view of God is one of perfection. The Lord has made some similar decisions to Zeus. Why are they portrayed in such different ways? In my opinion it is one of the biggest differences between a monotheistic society and a polytheistic society

  4. There are several things I find interesting about this reading in the Bible. First, the events that take place in the Bible are similar to some found in other beliefs. For example, scientology theories suggest that the earth was created when the "big bang" happened and matter started to form planets and stars. Then the earth evolved into a planet with life on it, and eventually humans were created. This process seems to match up with the Biblical story of creation. Maybe 7 days to God is the whole time it took for this matter to form the planet, we don't know. The story of the flood also matches up with a lot of other religious tales. Mythology even mentions a flood happening at some point. So all of these stories are very similar to those found in other beliefs or religions as well.
Another thing I noticed while reading was the differences in time. A man today does not live to be 900 years old, so maybe again, time was seen differently in the beginning of the earth. It just depends on what you believe. Maybe God did create people who lived to be 900, and then decided to change it so no one would live more than a certain number of years. Or the biblical stories could be a comparison to our years, just said differently. 900 years in the bible could be 90 years in our time.

  5. I just thought that it was beautiful how the rainbow God created symbolized the covenent he made with Noah and his sons, of the promise that He will never destroy the world with a flood again. It is a miraculous symbol, because then whenever it rains, we will be remembered of the sorrowful story of the evil men in Noah's time and of Noah's ark in the terrible flood. As the august rainbow shines through the heavey clouds after the rain, we will be assured that God's covenant is still true. Whether we believe in the Greek Mythology or the Bible, or neither, it is simply marvelous how much the symbols and morals they tell of us influence our diversing culture and ourselves.

  6. I find the stories in the bible very interesting because of the many similarities and differences to our own lives. Some of the similarities that i saw were how Cain was jealous of his brother Abel and eventually killed him because of it. We see these kinds of acts all the time on the news. I also saw anger, punishment, violence and praise that are all present in our world today. Some differences i saw were that people could live to be over 900 years old which is a strange concept for us. Also i saw that men had many children and wives, much like the book, Things Fall Apart, but not at all like our society today.

  7. Just like Audrey said, I feel as though that this reading is much easier than the Mythology book. I say that because The Book of Genesis is similar to the Mythology book and I find that I understand the Mythology book a little more than I did before now that I have started reading two stories that were similar, because reading two books with similar information helps me understand what I am reading, and lets me really sink in the knowledge. One thing that I noticed was that in chapter 6 I noticed that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were fair, and while reading the Mythology book, I noticed that the daughters there and just the women in general are not at the high level that men were at.

  8. I have to say for two pieces of literature which are very similar are very different as well. I'll admit, as many have already said above me, that the bible is in a very organized chronologic order, but at the same time it was a very boring read to me. Whole sections of chapters were just saying how old someone was and how long those people lived. However the greek's mythology was so interesting and action packked; it was a fun and exciting read! This led me to the realization that the greek's mythology was to explain everything but at the same time tell the tales of the hero's they were so proud of. However, the bible wasn't made to brag about amazing warroirs, it was made to bring all of the faith into control and obediance over a set of rules illustrated there.

  9. In the beginning of chapter four of the book of Genesis, Cain lied to God about one of the sins he committed. He told God that He did not kill his brother Able, yet he did. Even when God asked him repeatedly if he committed this murder he still failed to tell the truth. I still question why someone would do something like that and then lie about it to their God. In this, Cain went against not one, but two of the ten commandments. "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour" (Ex. 20:16). and also "Thou shalt not kill" (Ex. 20:13). I still wonder why Cain committed all of these sins.

  10. In general, I feel that both Mythology and The Bible are difficult works of literature because they were written many years ago and in a manner that is very formal. However the Bible has a sequence of events that is very precise, as opposed to mythology which displays full stories in a very informal sequence.
However while reading these chapters of genesis, it's reasonable to conclude that the Bible has many connections with Greek Mythology. For example; Both Zues and the Lord decided to exterminate the human race after it commited sin, and both gods decided to drown them in a flood. Like Taylor mentioned, these Gods are quite similar, so why are they portrayed so differently?

  11. I noticed that in the beginning, its all about how each person "knew their wife" and had all these kids. The writing in the chapter was mainly all names and names and more names. And then then next chapter was about Adam and Eve and all their kids and grandkids, etc. and how long they lives. I almost feel like all the writing in these were non-significant, and had no purpose. I found it weird that people were living for such long periods of time, like 800+ years. But this is only chapters four and five. I really really loved reading the next three chapters, (about Lamech, Noah and the ark) because if anyone has read "Many Waters" by madeleine e'lengle, she has almost all this information in the book, but made it into an awesome story. MAY I SUGGEST READING IT FOR ENGLISH, MR. DURNING?

  12. I find the bible so much easier and more interesting than the mythology, due to it being more comprehensive. So many theories are made by so many about who/what created the earth. We had a talk in class about the Big Bang and how some think that created the earth. Me being one who has studied the bible, I was brought up to believe that God created the earth and the people who are on it.I find intense how God and Zeus are so alike with their power, but use it in different ways. Zeus just always wants a combat, but God wants only the best for his children. On the other hand,if one performs a sin, God will punish you,not for him but for you. How we were talking about good vs. evil today in class, that was what popped in my head.

  13. I find it very interesting that the bible seems to really stress the idea that you should be ashamed of your body, so much so that Noah's sons must walk backwards to cover their father. Perhaps the bible has something to do with modern feelings of uneasiness toward a naked body. Also,I agree with what most people are saying, that the bible is a much easier to read piece of literature. However, I also agree with Ashley, that the stories in mythology were more intriguing to read, because they were so action packed and unpredictable.

  14. In Greek mythology I am realizing that the gods are a little less connected and more doing than god in Christianity. In the Book of Genesis instead of god building the ark for the human race he tells Noah to build the ark for them and the animals. In Greek mythology the gods are more hands on and give the Greeks fire, and wind, and act more like saviors. Also, in the beginning of the creation of earth god seemed more connected to his children unlike the gods in Greek mythology who lived in Olympus and stayed distant and sometimes act uncivil towards their followers.

  15. See I disagree with Khaleel I feel that the bible is so boring. I mean there is one god who has no flaws and damns you if you're bad but praises you when your good. Also the way the stories are told are very dull and slow. Mythology is so interesting, there are love stories and adventure and many different gods who all have flaws and all have their own characteristics. I have read.

  16. I also agree with Julian on his idea of nudity and how it is taboo in Christian culture, yet it isn't as taboo in Greek culture. Modesty is more socially acceptable in Christianity than it is in Greek mythology. Also, I believe that in Christianity, God's main focus is to rule over humans. In Greek mythology, the gods rule over the earth, but just so happens that humans are a part of that earth. It seems that the Bible is just much more flowing and intricate than Greek mythology. Also, I think it's easier to follow one god in monotheism then more than one god in polytheism.

  17. I found that in the Bible, God was more merciful and humanely in his actions than the gods and goddesses in mythology. For example, when Cain killed his brother Abel, instead of punishing him, God did him a favor and said you shall not be punished or harmed because of your sin. If this instance happened in mythology, the god would have probably cast a horrible death upon him or make him suffer in the underworld. In mythology the gods sometimes even ate their children! Another difference is that in the bible, Gods children are humans , where the children of god are horrible monsters.
