due Wednesday 9/16

1. Please read Genesis chapters 1, 2, and 3. Then comment, on this blog. Either compare the creation story in these chapters to the Ancient Greek creation story described in pages 65-77 of Mythology, or make some other comment about the Biblical creation story.

2. Either rewrite your summary and claim concerning chapter seven of Things Fall Apart, or go ahead and write your discussion based on the claim you already have.

  1. In the Greek religion chaos has two children and from them love is born. In the christian religion god creates good, when Eve feasts on the tree of knowledge she begins to know all evil. In this way the Greek and Christian religions contradict each other. The Greeks seemed to have a core belief that evil and chaos came first while the christian religion seems to think that the Earth and its wild creatures were good and with the creation of mankind evil began to seep into the world. It is interesting to me that all religions have such different perspectives on the creation of Earth and Mankind.

  2. In Christianity, the religion is based on one central figure (God), but Greek Mythology is not based on any one almighty person. Instead the figures in the myths are all fairly equal in importance and status. Although Zeus is somewhat more powerful and appears slightly more often than the other Gods and figures, he has his flaws. God on the other hand is not even a 'him' (no pun intended (hymn)), God is a 'Him' with a capital letter. In short, the God in Christianity has no flaws, but the gods in Greek Mythology do.

  3. In Mythology, the earth was created by two gods and the creation of the natural elements seemed to be formed by large forces, unlike the simple "commands" made by god in the bible. When reading Mythology, I got the since of major, almost monster like creatures instead of the vaguely human like ( but inhuman like powers) of God. I think this may be because it makes God seem more impressive and almighty because, unlike mythology, God WAS the only god. Also there seemed to be more of a purpose of the creation of the Earth because of the specific commands God makes. Where unlike in Mythology, they even used the term "Chaos" to express the creation of the world and mankind and there was a feel that the Earth was created accidentally.

  4. What I find most interesting about the book of Genesis is it's cornological structure in comparison to Greek mythology. In the beginning of Genesis, God creates the world on his own and rather rapidly. However it takes time for the human race to accumulate and for a specific example, for all evils to be unleashed into the world. Greek Mythology is almost exactly the opposite; It took multiple gods to create the universe and after it was created, the creaters were overthrown by their children (the 12 olympians). Soon after the human race had developed, evil suddenly entered the world when Pandora opened the box from zeus.

  5. I think it's interesting to see the contrast between the two religions. In Christiantiy, the earth was created by a single god, which interested me because in mythology, there are many different gods which rule different parts of nature. If there is only one "god" in christianity, is that one god representing all of the other gods in Greek mythology? The question is indded very interesting. Also, I think that it's interesting how according to Christianity, the earth was created in seven days. I always thought that theory was very intreguing.

  6. I noticed that all the gods in Mythology all took time to create things in the world, where God in the Genesis just said "let there be light" and light came into appearance. I think they are also very opposing in the time it took to create everthing. God took six days to create almost the entire world, where the gods in mythology took much more time, and it almost seemed like they thought about it more. It seemed to me that God just got an idea of something to put on earth, said let it be, and it became.

  7. In Christianity the one god, was kind and loving to everything. It is interesting to note that in Greek mythology some of the gods were very cruel to the Greeks and Greece itself. God in Christianity though was warm and affectionate to his new creation of earth, and gave Adam and Eve wisdom and blessed them. God in Christianity also let the humankind dominate over every other creature, unlike Greek mythology where there was always a force dominating the Greeks.

  8. Well what was the most interesting thing to me was that in the christian religion there is clearly one god and he created every thing. He is not the child of anyone and, being brought up as a christian, I know that he only had one child ,Jesus, who was a miraculous birth (mary and god were not lovers). Also God created the universe in christianity and the universe didn't create the gods as it is in the Greek religion.

  9. While reading the Bible and also the Mythology book, I realized that in the Christian religion, there is only one God, yet in Mythology there are many Gods. Also in the Christian religion, there is one God who created the world, but on the opposing side it is one earth who created many Gods. I really enjoyed getting to compare and contrast these two very similar and different point of views.

  11. While reading The book of Genesis and reading the Mythology book, I saw a lot of things that were just a little similar. One of those things were that in the book of Genesis, I saw that the Christians believed that earth was made by just one god, but when I read the Mythology Book, I saw that they believed that many gods created the earth and the heavens. Lastly, just like Miranda said, I too found it interesting reading the book of genesis and the Mythology book, and then comparing and contrasting the both of them.

  12. I thought it was interesting how the story of Pandora's box and Eve's eating the forbidden fruit were so similar. I also found it funny how woman always seem to cause the problems for the men!
