Exercise in Characterization
Look at the three pictures above, then find them at http://www.wga.hu by typing "Athena" in the "text" box. Click on the pictures there and they will get big enough to study. If you get a blank, try clicking on "50%."
A. Which of the three versions of Athena is most appealing to you personally? Why? Write a sentence about each portrayal, in which you try to articulate specifically why one version is most appealing, least appealing, in the middle. (Total: three sentences, one for each painting.) If you and your partner decide to agree, work together; if you don't agree, or just would prefer to have a different response to the assignment, work independently.
B. Come up with two details in support of your explanation. Describe each detail in a clear, specific sentence or two. (Total: six details, two for each picture.)
C. Consult the terms of visual analysis in the Humanities Department handbook, at www.walnuthillfaculty.org. Which term applies to each detail you chose? If you don't think any terms apply to your detail, say so.
