due Tuesday 10/20

1. 230-240 in Mythology

2. Look over the dialogue parts of Oedipus the King so far (1252) and find a dramatic moment (involving two people) and choose a number of lines from a speech (or speeches) connected to that dramatic moment that you can commit to memorizing. Tomorrow you'll get your partner.

  1. (post for wednesday 10/21)

This was a very dramatic and intense scene,(Oedipus lines 1289-1422) because Oedipus finds out that he was cursed by a fate at birth to kill his father and sleep with his mother who is now his wife. This passage shows that Fate is evident and believed in, Oedipus the King. I felt pity for all of the characters because Oedipus has just found out that he killed his own father and slept with his mother which has an effect on everyone else. Oedipus says when he finds out, "Ah so it all came true. It's so clear now. Oh light, let me look at you one final time, a man who stands revealed as cursed by birth," Also, the servant who was given Oedipus by Jocasta and gave him to someone else, was is a great deal of pain when he was being forced to reaveal what he knew about Oedipus's horrible fate. He says, "By all the Gods, don't torture an old man!" Even Jocasta will suffer for this because now that everyone knows about Oedipus, they will have a very difficult relationship; a mother and son being husband and wife.
